What are the requirements to rent a car with Car Rental Big Island?

You must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license. Renters are required to have their own auto insurance, which we quickly verify through Axle in just seconds. Additional insurance is optional and can be purchased through Allianz Travel Insurance, Car Rental Insurance Options, or RentalCover.com.

Is there a minimum age to rent a car?

Yes, renters must be at least 21 years old. A valid driver’s license and personal insurance coverage are required.

Is mileage limited on rentals?

No – we offer unlimited miles with every rental. Explore the Big Island to your heart’s content without worrying about extra mileage charges.

What happens if I return the car without a full tank?

We charge a $15 convenience fee in addition to the cost of fuel if the vehicle is returned without a full tank. You’re welcome to refill before returning to avoid this fee..

Do you offer insurance?

We don’t provide in-house insurance, but you can easily purchase coverage through third-party providers like Allianz, Car Rental Insurance Options, or RentalCover.com. Your own personal insurance must be active and verifiable for the rental.

What is your late return policy?

We offer a 30 to 120-minute grace period for late returns at a flat fee of $50. If you’re more than 2 hours late, it will count as an additional day plus a $40 fee.

Are you open 24/7?

Yes! Car Rental Big Island operates 24/7, making it convenient for early morning arrivals, late-night returns, or anytime in between.

What should I do if I have a problem with the vehicle or get into an accident?

Your safety is the top priority. Contact emergency services if needed, then reach out to us immediately – we’re available 24/7. File the police report! Follow your insurance provider’s procedure, and we’ll help guide you through any necessary documentation or next steps.

Pick Up

We provide delivery and pickup to Kona Airport and anywhere in the Kona area, so you can skip the long lines and overpriced, cookie-cutter rental cars.

Prefer a contactless experience? We’ve got you covered — we’ll send you a pin with the exact location of your vehicle for a smooth, self-service pickup.

Every vehicle is thoroughly sanitized and goes through a detailed multipoint inspection between trips, ensuring your ride is clean, safe, and professionally maintained.

Return

Fuel Up: Please return the Vehicle with a full tank of gas.

Double-Check Your Belongings.

Park & Notify: Park the Vehicle at the location we agreed on, then text us the exact spot you left it.

If a Car Rental Big Island team member is not present when you return the vehicle:

Please take eight photos for documentation:
Front, Back, Driver side, Passenger side, Roof, Front seats (interior), Back seats (interior), Rear area with the tailgate open.
Email or text these photos to Us to confirm the vehicle’s condition.

Then head to the airport with a heart full of memories and stories to tell — your friends and family will wish they’d come with you!

Late Return Policy

If the vehicle is not returned at the agreed date, time, and location, any discounted or special rates will be voided and standard daily rates + late fees will apply.
We ask that you contact us immediately if there are any delays or issues with your return.

Please note: Our rentals are often booked back-to-back, so we are rarely able to accommodate last-minute extensions, location changes, or late drop-offs. We’ll always do our best to help — but we will never delay a new guest’s reservation for a late return.

Non-Return Policy

If you fail to return the vehicle as agreed and do not respond via email, phone, or text, the vehicle will be reported as stolen, and we will locate and retrieve it immediately.
